I am going to make a terrible, terrible confession. I am not crazy about football. Let’s not get excited here! I do watch football…I am just not crazy about it. I am also less excited about football fans. Ever visit a sports bar at 7:00 p.m. and see the table full of pudgy guys scrolling on sheets of paper trying to figure out their fantasy football league picks? Well, I bet if you asked anyone of those guys who the Quarterback is for the Cleveland Technical College, not only will they give you a name but they could rattle off some stats as well. These guys are gung-ho fans!
The problem that the A.S.P. has is they are trying to create the same loyalty but only focusing on the big leagues. Their choice is the game of the mindless…Fantasy Surfer. Fantasy Surfer focuses only on the top 34 surfers on the World Tour and a few wild cards. You get a set purse and you have to pick a team with the money you have. If a surfer does well, their value goes up. So the game has little to do with talent and has more to do with money management. To make matters worse for the A.S.P., this site has a forum which allows the users to bash the contests, the A.S.P., the surfers, and each other in the most vile ways possible. Great way to cater towards the fans and the groms.
But there is hope… Meet Trent. Trent is a father who created Fantasy Pro Surfing. Trent has a site that the players voluntarily chip in to help fund to keep the game going. This site also has a forum which for some reason is self policed and the fans seem to have actual discussions about the contests. The game is completely different as well and is based on the star and prime series contests that are held around the world. In this format, you can pick 4 contestants from 3 different seeding levels so you will have a twelve man team. Then the fun begins as they battle it out in 4 man heats until they reach the man on man rounds. Sounds pretty easy? Well, it is far from it. Surfers no-show, surfers go through slumps, the waves get hairy, and you have to pick from a sea of unfamiliar names which makes you have to do some research to see just who these guys are.
So hopefully one day the A.S.P. will see the light and invest in the real game of the A.S.P. If you have not tried this game yet…do it! And don’t be surprised if in a year you look at 50 names and quickly check your favorites like Andre Silva, Nick Squires, and Jonathan Gonzalez without batting an eye.
If you are interested in playing, make a team and jump in! This season is almost over of course but there is always some time to start and figuire it out before the next season begins.
