I have been putzing around with posting this but it seems that Shea Lopez and the others are as well so I might as well put my picks out there before it is a day before the event. Here are my thoughts (pre-heat draw of course so things can change and will).
The surf forecast at this point does not show any major swell activity. So it might be the time for the lighter air guys to shine. Maybe some tropical activity off of Mexico might change things up for Trestles.
Gabriel Medina – Not a Gabby like year but this is a good place to shake off the blues.
Kolohe Andino – With a good Prime result behind him and the pressure of re-qualification lifted; this could be the opportunity for the guy to cut loose.
Dane Reynolds – Dane currently has a wrist injury but has not pulled out yet.
Mitch Crews – Some people used to tell me that I surfed aggressively so in my dreams I feel like I am surfing like Mitch Crews. In reality, Mitch Crews is a pit bull. And Mullet Killer said I surf like Aritz Aranburu. One has a great layback. The other has a great layback, air game, and surfs like he consumed twenty Red Bulls. The other difference is that one is on track to be on the WCT and could upset a high seed if he gets the right waves in this event. Only inexperience could be his down fall.
If I had to pick some others for this event, I would be thinking Josh Kerr and Julian Wilson. For a high seed it would be Mick Fanning.
Also, if Dane does pull out of the event…I am sure Kelly, Joel, and Mick will be moon walking in their pajamas around the kitchen. Please note his effort from last years event:
